Just like the type of fixture needed, there are no rules! However, there are factors to consider. Each space in your home will be used differently. For kitchens and bathrooms, task lighting is most important. In lounge and relaxing areas, ambient lighting takes control.

When lighting a space that will be used for tasks, light output matters. A good rule of thumb is to take your room square footage and multiply it by 40. For example, if your room is 100SF, you will need 4,000 lumens in the total area. This is approximately equivalent to 265 watts in the total area.

Lumens are the standard measurement of light output. Essentially, lumens measure brightness. Contrary to popular belief, wattage does not measure brightness but the energy output, though most wattage is generally standard to the brightness. There are standard conversions from lumens to wattage:

LED stands for light emitting diode and are quickly becoming the new lighting standard. LED lighting products produce light approximately 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. LEDs can last anywhere from 20,000 to 50,000 hours, which is five times longer than any comparable bulb on the market.
